A memorial service for Edward J. Alfonsin, 71, Potsdam, who died Jan. 7, is scheduled for May 5 at 2 p.m. in Dunn Theater at SUNY Potsdam. A reception will immediately follow.
He taught for 32 years as an English Professor at SUNY Potsdam. Starting in 1975, he held elected terms as statewide secretary, membership development officer and Executive Board member, and appointee to 8 negotiations teams.
He knew all there was to know about the UUP, Parliamentary procedures or the American labor movement. Upon retiring in 1997 from teaching but not union matters, he was awarded the Outstanding Active Retiree of the Year in 2011. His union service extended to the Public Employees Federation and NYSUT where he served as parliamentarian on several committees.
He was also visible in his community as a volunteer with Seaway Valley Prevention Council, The United Church of Christ and the Norwood Model Railroad Club.
His wishes were to donate his body to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse so that he could continue teaching even in death.
Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St Lawrence Valley, UUP College Scholarship Trust Fund (Potsdam Campus), The Norwood Model Railroad Club or any other charity of your choice in his name.
