Matthew Girard Ranieri, 47, of Brushton, passed away Friday, September 2, 2011 at the residence of his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Joyce Ranieri.
He was born on July 18, 1964 in Malone, the son of Joseph Ranieri and Iola ( Woods) Ranieri.
Matthew graduated from Brushton-Moira Central School. He also graduated from Suny Canton where he was a member of the Phi Chi Epsilon fraternity. He then received a Bachelors and Masters Degree from Potsdam State University.
After graduation from SUNY Potsdam, Matthew went to work for the New York State Deptartment of Corrections and retired with 24 years of service as a lieutenant at Upstate Correctional Facility. During his time in Corrections, Matthew worked at Upstate, Riverview and several other facilities throughout the State of New York.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1984 to 2006.
In his free time, Matthew loved talking about and educating himself and others in history. He enjoyed taking his children to old military forts and he especially cherished the time that he shared with his children.
Mr. Ranieri was predeceased by his father, Joseph F. Ranieri. He is survived by his sons, Dominic and Dimitri Ranieri both of Keyser, W.V.; his mother, Iola (Woods) Ranieri, formerly of Brushton and currently residing in Mohawk; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary-Margaret Ranieri-Riesel and husband Daniel Riesel of Mohawk, and Martha and Scott Sturgen of Moira; brother and sister-in-law Michael and Joyce Ranieri of Brushton; nieces and nephews Joseph and Andrew Ranieri of Brushton,and Elyse, Chelsea and Nicholas Sturgen, all of Moira; and several step-nieces, step-nephews, aunts and uncles.
Friends are invited to call at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira, on Monday, September 5, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 in St. Mary’s Church at noon with Rev. Christopher Looby officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
