HEUVELTON -- A Funeral Mass for Mary E. Barlow, age 78, of State Street, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday (Aug 10, 2018) at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Kevin O’Brien officiating. Entombment will follow at Foxwood Memorial Park.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mrs. Barlow passed away at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Heuvelton, NY surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday (Aug 7, 2018).

Surviving is her husband Richard Barlow; a son Richard (Renee) Barlow of Clifton Park, NY; two daughters Babette (Phil) Lenfant of Yorktown, Virginia and Colleen (David ) Steele of Heuvelton, NY; grandchildren Adam, Joshua and Nicole Barlow; Nicholas, Andrew & Ryan Lenfant; Alex & Noah Steele; brothers James (Judy) Durant of Helena, NY and Paul (Denise) Durant of Ballston Spa, NY; sisters Ellen (Daniel) Prosser of Webster, NY and Patricia (Matthew) Knox of Bedford, Virginia; a brother-in-law Kenneth Cole of Nicholville, NY; sisters-in-law Mary Durant of Brunswick, GA and Maryanne Durant of Louisville, NY; along with a special Aunt Ruth Klaus of Heuvelton, NY, and many special nieces, nephews & cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Jean Cole and two brothers Joseph & Jeremiah Durant.

Mary was born on July 30, 1940 in Brasher Falls NY, a daughter of the late George & Hazel (Premo) Durant. She graduated from St. Lawrence Central School and continued her education at the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing where she received her nursing degree. She later married Richard E. Barlow on December 30, 1961 at St. Patrick’s Church in Hogansburg.

During her career she was employed at Mercy Hospital in Watertown for a period, relocated back to Heuvelton in 1962 and began working at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital. She also worked as a school nurse teacher for St. Lawrence Lewis BOCES from 1971-1972. She later became the school nurse at Heuvelton Central School until her retirement in 1995, dedicating 23 years of service. She enjoyed retirement with her husband Dick. They traveled and spent winters in Lake Mary, FL

Mary was a board member of the St. Lawrence County Cancer Society; a chairperson of the Heuvelton Cancer Drive; a St. Raphael’s Catholic Church parishioner and parish board member; an alumni member of the Heuvelton Teachers Association and A. Barton Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing. Mary also received awards for NYS volunteer teacher of the year in 1993, and citizen of the year from the Heuvelton Chamber of Commerce in 1995.

Mary enjoyed quilting, crafts, and spending time with family. She was a kind and generous person who was always willing to lend a helping hand where needed.
