Marshall W. Backus, 97, formerly of Heuvelton

Marshall W. Backus, 97, Sun City, AZ passed away on January 23 at his home in Brighton Gardens.

Marshall (Mark) was born on December 16, 1914, in Heuvelton to the late Robert I. Backus and the late Dacy Fay Marshall Backus. After finishing high school and Ag-Tech School in Canton in 1935, Mark got his first job as a retail clerk at the Grain League Federation Exchange in Heuvelton.

Mark married Helen Duffer on March 1, 1938, and they moved to Evans Mills where he began a series of promotions that was to mark his career with the cooperative for 38 years. By 1957, Mark had moved up to district manager in Ithaca then on to feed sales manager in 1968 when GLF had merged and become a giant farm cooperative known as Agway. In 1972, Mark was named media coordinator, a position he held until his retirement in January 1978.

Helen and Mark moved to Arizona in 1978 and settled in Sun City. Mr. Backus was a member of the Willowbrook United Methodist Church of Sun City where he was active in a variety of church organizations for many years. He enjoyed golf, bowling, and was an active member of the Sun City Elks and Sun City Bell Lions Club.

Mark was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Helen in 2005; and his son Bradley in 1972. He was also preceded by his brother, Donald.

Survivors include his daughter, Elaine Wood and son-in-law James Wood of Surprise, AZ. He was a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren, Shari, Jeff, Julie, Susan; and his four great-grandchildren.

A 1:30 p.m. memorial service will be held in his honor on Tuesday, January 31, at Willowbrook United Methodist Church located at 19390 N. 99th Ave. Sun City, AZ 85373.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Willowbrook United Methodist Church Foundation, Sun City, AZ or the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
