Laurence Graves, 80, Gouverneur

Laurence Graves, 80, of Gouverneur, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. There will be a Fireman’s service on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be on Thursday, January 19th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. James Meola officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur.

Laurence was born on February 17, 1931 in Ogdensburg to the late Charles and Jessie (Taylor) Graves. He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1949. He married Isabelle L. Storie on October 31, 1952 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Wood officiating. Laurence entered into the United States Army Reserve in 1951 and served for 38 years retiring in 1989 as the 417 Eng BTN Command Sgt. Major.

Laurence also worked at Graves’ Bakery and Red & White Store in 1951; he worked at St. Joe Lead retiring in 1993 as the general maintenance foreman; while working there, he owned and operated the Log Cabin Diner for 11 years. He was a member of the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years were he served as 1st and 2nd Assistant Chief and Chief retiring in 1985. He was the NY State Fire Inspector for 11 years. He served as Town Councilman for 12 years and was a member of the St. Lawrence County Republican Party. He served on the St. Lawrence Co. Fire Advisory board and was on the Gouverneur area Developmental Corp. He enjoyed hunting, going to auctions, doing repair work, baking and cooking.

He is survived by his wife, Isabelle L. Graves of Gouverneur; two sons and their wives, Charles and Valerie (Carbone) Graves and Colin and Vickie (Yerdon) Graves all of Gouverneur; and four grandchildren, Jon and Stephanie Graves of Albany, Jessica Graves of Gouverneur, Adrienne Graves of Liverpool and Mallory Graves of Gouverneur.

Laurence was predeceased by a brother, Melvin Graves; and a sister, Isabel Gingras.
