L. Joyce Moses, 86, Gouverneur

L. Joyce Moses, age 86, of Gouverneur, passed away at her home on October 11, 2011 in the presence of family and her long time caregiver, Linda Gilbo.

Joyce was born Lois Joyce MacLean to Murray and Essie (Droppo) MacLean in Chesterville, Canada on February 27, 1925. She graduated from Massena High School in 1943. Following high school, Joyce worked as secretary for the St. Lawrence County Highway Department and as a volunteer nurse’s aide during WWII.

She married Edward I. Moses in 1947. The couple resided in Massena until their move to Gouverneur in 1958 where Ed became President of Kinney Drugs.

Joyce was on the Auxillary Board of the E.J. Noble Hospital. She was dedicated to her work at the United Methodist Church- serving as a Sunday School Teacher and on the Finance Committee.

She was active on the committee for the Edward I. Moses Walk/Run for Life, benefiting cancer patients in Northern New York. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting, golfing, cooking, and spending time with her friends and family at Sylvia Lake.

Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Earl in 1939 and her husband, Ed in 1979.

She is survived by her brother, Dalton MacLean and his wife Florence of Massena; her three children, Edward Moses of Orlando, FL, Laurie Moses of Austin, TX and James Moses and his wife Terry of Gouverneur; four grandchildren and one step grandson, Molly Moses of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer Moses of New York, Eric and Alan Moses of Lebanon, PA and Dustin Hitsman of Plattsburgh.

A memorial service will be on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Benham officiating. A burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Richville. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
