Mrs. Josephine Margaret Barnes Mitchell, 81, of 30 First Street, St. Regis, Quebec, peacefully passed away on Monday afternoon, May 30, 2011 at Cornwall Community Hospital, where she was admitted the previous day.
Josephine was born October 27, 1929 in Hogansburg, the daughter of Fred and Louise Cook Barnes. She attended St. Regis Mohawk School and Bombay High School. On February 19, 1955, she married Joseph Mitchell at St. Regis Catholic Church; he predeceased her on April 27, 1963.
She was a homemaker raising her eight children. She once worked in New York City and Lake Placid. She also worked at Cornell’s in Massena for a short time and at the Akwesasne Old Age Home in St. Regis Village. Josephine enjoyed going to garage sales, the casino, playing cards, and baking bread. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and family get togethers. Josephine was a mother that her family could count on for any family member and was always there for everyone.
Josephine is survived by her five daughters and three sons, Louise and Jack Lazore and Freda White, all of Snye, Jessica Lazore of St. Regis, Cindy Mitchell and Allen Anderson of Cornwall, Laura Mitchell and Steve Benedict of St. Regis, Fred Mitchell and Vicky Benedict of Hogansburg, Carl and Anita Mitchell of Snye and Curtis Mitchell of Hogansburg; 28 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren; her sister, Marsha Barnes of Hogansburg; her brother, Darryl and Erica Barnes, of Hogansburg; her sisters-in-law, Grace Barnes, Annabelle Oakes, Cecilia Mitchell, Bertha Oakes, and Minnie Garrow; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Dewey Lazore on June 13, 2008; a great grandson, Zachary Adams on April 1, 2009; a sister, Catherine Rita Jacobs on January 17, 2002; and two brothers, Louis Barnes who was killed during WWII and Gerald T. Barnes on October 26, 2009.
Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers, Snye beginning at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday until 10:00 a.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 a.m. at St. Regis Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis, Quebec.
