Funeral services with full military honors for Joseph Szaybel, 94, formerly of Westwood Drive, Massena, will be held Monday 12 Noon, August 23, 2010 at the Church of Sacred Heart, Massena with Rev Donald J. Manfred presiding. Friends and family may be received Sunday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home.
Joseph P. Szaybel passed away Friday evening, August 20, 2010 at the St. Regis Nursing Home where he had been a resident since November, 2009.
He is survived by two sisters, Irene Pratt and Ethel Sharlow both of Massena and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Yolonda Manville, John in infancy and Stephen in April 10, 1945 .
He was born on July 11,1916 in Massena, the son on Joseph and Catherine (Bregg) Szaybel. Joseph entered the US Army serving in the Medical Corps during World War II. He married Claire Leduc on August 7, 1948 at the Nativity Church in Cornwall, Ontario. Mrs. Szaybel predeceased him on January 19, 2006. He worked for Alcoa in the Wire Mill.
He was a member of the 25 year Club at Alcoa., charter member of the Massena Elks Club Lodge B.P.O.E. 1702, a member of the VFW #1143, American Legion Post # 79 and the Knights of Columbus Council # 1141. The American Legion Post # 79 and the VFW # 1143 will hold a joint service Sunday evening at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home.The Knights of Columbus will services Sunday evening at 7:45 p.m. and the Massena Elks Lodge # 1702 will hold memorial services Sunday evening at 8:15 p.m. at the funeral home.
