John William Sherwin, age 85, of Moira, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at his home where he was in the care of his family and Hospice of the North Country in Malone.
John was born March 30, 1925 in Conifer, son of the late Wilber and Hazel Gyrus Sherwin. He attended school in Tupper Lake and Conifer. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage on September 1, 1943 to Mary Ann Bassette in Tupper Lake. Sherwin first went to work as a baker for Wonder Bread and then drove tractor trailer for Miller Co. in Connecticut, driving cross country. John served as the Town of Moira Town Justice for 17 years. He retired in 1986.
He enjoyed playing cards in his free time.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Ann; children, Shawn T. Sherwin of Lake Havasu AZ, Jockeni and Richard Tiso of Waterbury, CT, Darcy Sherwin of Boca Raton FL; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his siblings, Tye Sherwin, Craig Sherwin and Trisha Sherwin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Brushton, with Rev. Christopher Looby officiating. Spring burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
