John Walter Smith, 79, of Glenville, formerly of Norfolk, passed away peacefully June 23, 2011 at Baptist Health and Rehabilitation Center, his family at his side.
Born in Morristown on January 20, 1932, John was the son of the late Walter and Pansy Langtry Smith.
He served as a radar Man 2nd class in the U.S. Navy from 1950-51.
John lived in Norfolk and was a branch manager for Beneficial Finance Company for many years, retiring in 1993.
In younger years he was an avid motorcyclist, camper, snow mobile rider and downhill skier.
He enjoyed scuba diving and volunteered often for search and rescue.
John belonged to Norfolk Rod and Gun Club and was on the Norwood-Norfolk Central Schools District's Shared Decision Making Team, past master of What Cheer Mason Lodge, model airplane flying club, bowling league and in later years enjoyed woodworking.
John was an active member of the Raymondville Methodist Church.
His wife, Shirley Smith, passed away on December 5, 2009.
John's family would like to express their gratitude for the warmth and competence of the staff at the Baptist. They have been superb caregivers, advisors and friends.
John is survived by his two daughters, Renee (Walter) Dunn and Leanna (Frank) Leffler; his son, Barry (Maria) Smith; his brother, Dr. Bruce (Deb) Smith; his grandchildren, Carolyn and Brian Dunn, James and Jack Smith, Jared and Ryan Reed, and Jesse and Nick Leffler. John also leaves behind his faithful Yorkshire Terrier, Buttercup.
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family at Glenville Funeral Home.
Burial will be at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenridge Rd., with full military honors.
