Mr. John “Kahionhanoron” David, 82, of 114 Hilltop Drive, passed away on Wednesday evening, October 6, 2010 at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec after a short illness.
John was born on February 14, 1928 on St. Regis Island the son of William and Martha White David. He attended schools on St. Regis Island and CCVS in Cornwall. He later took welding courses in Toronto to become a certified welder. After his retirement, he took computer courses. On January 9, 1950, he married Mary A. Barnhart at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George Brodeur, SJ, officiating.
John worked at Alcoa for 35 years in various positions, retiring in 1986 as a lathe operator. Before going to Alcoa, he worked for New York State in the tree planting program at the World War II Vacation Resort in Lake Placid. He also worked as an ironworker for a short time. After his retirement, he started “gentleman farming”, raising beef cattle. He also worked for a short time at the St. Regis Home for the Aged as an orderly for the male residents. He was a former member of the Massena Moose Lodge #1110. He enjoyed reading, playing bingo, and sports, especially, hockey, boxing, lacrosse, and NASCAR. He also enjoyed fishing, playing pool, watching CNN and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; seven children, Kenneth David of Akwesasne, Brian David and his wife, Leona of Cornwall Island, Sheila, Charlene and Millie David of St. Regis, Matthew David and his companion, Retha of Akwesasne, and Greg David and his wife, Tammy of Cornwall Island; his daughter-in-law, Mamie David of Akwesasne; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; two sisters, Ester Mitchell and Rose Thompson of Cornwall Island; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Sara Beth and Jeremy David; and two brothers, Richard and Anthony “Tony” David.
Friends may call Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis, Quebec.
