A Mass of Resurrection for Joan M. Russell, 72, of Parker Avenue Massena will be held 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at St. Mary's Church Massena with Rev. J. Michael Gaffney celebrant. The family will be receiving visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Norwood at their convenience. Joan passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Massena Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her long-time companion, James Watson; two daughters, Nancy Stoddard and Patti Dabiew both of Massena; two sons, Randy and Robert J. Jandrew both of Massena; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Christian of Lancaster, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Etta Christian; one sister, Rita Christian; and one brother, Donald Christian.
Joan was born May 27, 1939 the daughter of Albert and Etta Lashomb Christian in Potsdam. She graduated from Norwood-Norfolk High School in 1957. On September 20, 1958 she married Robert Jandrew at St. Andrews Church in Norwood by Rev. Gerald F. McGrath. The marriage ended in divorce in 1988. On December 30, 1988 Joan married Arthur Russell who predeceased her on April 14, 1995. In earlier years she was employed at local A&P Stores and at Syracuse University. The last 26 years before her retirement she was employed at a local restaurant as a bar tender.
Joan was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Massena and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the AMVETS Post #4 and the American Legion Post #79 both of Massena. Joan was an avid camper and enjoyed camping as much as possible.
