Funeral services for Jessie M. Bishop, age 98, a resident of the United Helpers Nursing Home and formerly of the River Road in Heuvelton, will be held on Thursday (Mar 24, 2011) at 11:00 a.m. at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in the spring.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with an Eastern Star Ritual taking place at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Bishop died Saturday (Mar 19, 2011) at the nursing home surrounded by her family.
Surviving is her son, George Bishop and his wife Trudy of Heuvelton; daughters Beverly Putnam and Frances Countryman both of Rensselaer Falls and Edna Lake of Heuvelton; and 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband, Franklin on Jan 31, 1994; a sister, Ruth Downing; two foster sisters, Bernice Harris and Pearl Parish; two foster brothers, Hollis and Merlin Hays; and two sons-in-law, Merle Putnam and Dan Lake.
Jessie was born on Jan 13, 1913 in Lisbon, the biological daughter of the late Warren and May (King) Worden and foster parents George and Susan Hayes. She obtained her education from the Depeyster Rural School, and married Franklin Bishop on Sept 20, 1930 at the Heuvelton Methodist Church Parsonage with Rev. Clyde Sparling officiating.
She and her husband owned and operated the Bishop Electric Company in Heuvelton for many years. She also worked as a Matron for the St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Department for 10 years before retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Dekalb & Depeyster Senior Citizens Organization and a long time member of the Order or Eastern Stars since 1950 where she held the position of Matron in 1958 and District Deputy Grand Matron in 1984.
She enjoyed knitting, baking, her cats, watching birds, shopping going on trips and spending time with her family.
