Irene M. Reed, 91, of Edwards, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2011 at her home under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice and her loving family.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from noon to 2 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Edwards. The funeral service will be on Monday, December 5 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. William Hart officiating. Burial will be at Gates Cemetery in South Edwards at a later date.
Irene was born on May 2, 1920 in Edwards to the late Bruce and Carrie (Creighton) Ward. She attended Edwards Central School.
She married Earl Reed Jr. on July 8, 1944. Earl was killed while in service over in France in September of 1944.
She had a long-time companion, Silas “Woodie” Whitford for many years from 1945 until he passed away on December 2, 1995.
Irene was a bus driver for Edwards Central School for 19½ years. She was also an Avon saleswoman for several years.
She was a member of the Edwards Historical Association and a former member of the Edwards VFW Auxillary. She enjoyed her cat and doing puzzle books.
Irene is survived by five sons and their wives, Patrick and Dawn Mullaney Sr. of Edwards, Ronald and Sarah Reed of Elizabethtown, Tenn., James and Crystal Whitford of Edwards, Kenneth and Donna Whitford of Edwards and Ricky and Joann Whitford of Fullerville; three daughters, Patricia LaPlante of Edwards, Vicky Church of Elizabethtown, Tenn. and Earlene “Sally” Bigerel of Austin, TX; 26 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, William Whitford, who passed away in 1979; three brothers, Bower, Gerald and Seth Ward; a sister, Mary Cole; two grandsons and one great-grandson.
