A visitation and gathering of friends to celebrate the life of Hubert Thomas O’Connell, 71, formerly of Massena, was held on Friday, September 2, 2011 at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home. O’Connell passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on August 26, 2011 after a valiant fight against cancer.
Hubert’s survivors include his beloved wife of 47 years, Joanne Stashak O’Connell; son Jeffrey O’Connell; daughter Erin O’Connell; daughter-in-law Alana O’Connell; grandson William J. O’Connell; and brothers Gerald O’Connell and wife Rosie, David O’Connell and wife Patty Kay; and sisters Muriel MacDonald, Kathleen Hulse and husband Fred, Marilyn Flack, and Susan Clarke; and Mary Alice O’Connell, wife of the late Linus O’Connell.
Hubert was born Oct. 25, 1939 and raised in Massena and at a young age was part of the construction of the Long Sault Dam during a time when the St. Lawrence Seaway Power Project was being built around 1957. He served in the U.S. Army as an MP.
He graduated with a BS in accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He lived and worked as a CPA in Milwaukee, Wisc., New Jersey, New York City, and Beaufort, SC. For the past 33 years he worked and resided in Houston, Texas. His career in public accounting and industrial/manufacturing businesses took him around the world.
His legacy of loving his family, generosity of spirit, beautiful smile and humor will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him so well and will forever grace the lives of those who follow. He truly was the ‘dearest of hearts’.
