Mr. Howard S. Porter, 83, of 1520 State Route 37 and 1993 4th Line Road, Ohsweken, Ontario, passed away on Monday evening, June 13, 2011 at Tsiionkwanonso:te, Cornwall Island Long Term Care Facility.
Howard was born on October 21, 1927 in Ohsweken, Ontario, the son of the late Grant and Flora Garlow Porter. He served in the US Army from May 11, 1951 until his honorable discharge in April 29, 1953 as a Colonel. Following his discharge, he served in the US Army Reserves until March 25, 1957. He married Margaret I. Chubb, who predeceased him on June 7, 2007.
Howard worked for Laurel and Mack until his retirement after many dedicated years of service. He was a member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479, Hogansburg and of the Akwesasne Baptist Church. Howard enjoyed gardening and adored his poodle, Velvet. He also loved spending time with his nieces, nephews, and family.
Howard is survived by his nieces and nephews who were his chosen children, Tom Porter of Fonda, Herbert Porter of Niagara Falls, Sandra Fox, Johanne Jackson, and Ted Porter, Sr., all of Akwesasne; his stepchildren, Louis Roundpoint and Arlene Baker, both of Arizona; his sisters, Ethel Baker and Julia Porter, both of Niagara Falls, and Gloria Wolf of Ohsweken; his brother, Arnold Porter of Niagara Falls; and many additional nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Porter; and a sister, Dolores Porter.
Friends may call beginning Wednesday 6:00 p.m. at his home in Akwesasne, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Hubert Hill, pastor of the Akwesasne Baptist Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Chubb Family Cemetery.
