Herbert “Vernon” Slate, 96, of Gouverneur, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur.
Calling hours will be on Friday, February 17th from 2 -4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. The funeral mass will be on Saturday, February 18th at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Father Stephen Rocker officiating. Burial will be in the spring at St. James Cemetery.
Vernon was born on February 9, 1916 in Rockport, Ontario to the late Robert “Herbert” and Bella (Murphy) Slate. He graduated from Hammond School in 1937 and entered into the United States Army on October 6, 1942 and served in the 63rd division during WWII until his honorable discharge in December 23, 1945. Vernon married Kathleen M. Emrich on September 24, 1941 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rossie with Fr. Cornelius Collins officiating. Kathleen passed away on November 18, 2008.
Vernon was a carpenter working for Robert Curtin Construction in Watertown for many years, retiring in 1982. He also worked at St. James as a maintenance worker for 10 years. He was a member of the Gouverneur VFW, the Carpenters Local 747 and he is a member of the St. James Catholic Church.
Surviving are three sons and a daughter-in-law, Duane (Ernie) and Penny Slate of Antwerp, Steven Slate of Bellingham, MA and Neal Slate of Gouverneur; two daughters and a son-in-law, Beth A. and Allen Martin of Gouverneur and Charlotte A. Stiefel of Gouverneur; and three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Winona Austin and Vivian Isereau; a brother, Gerald D. Slate; a granddaughter, Barbara Stiefel; a step grandson, LeRoy Stiefel; and a great granddaughter.
