Herbert J. McCumber, age 60, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at his home under the care of his loving family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 15th at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur and burial will be in East Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Calling hours are today, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Herbert was born December 2, 1950 in Gouverneur, the son of Herbert W. and Minnie Reed McCumber. Herbert graduated from Gouverneur High School where he excelled at football, playing for coach Frank LaFalce.Herb worked for the family business, selling the company to the Hershey Ice Cream Company, then operated the northern territory for Hershey for 14 years. He later worked for Mercer's Dairy, and Waste Stream Management. Herb and his family also had food and ice cream concession stands at the Gouverneur St. Lawrence County fair for over 50 years. Herb married Melody LaPlante and raised 3 kids.
Herb enjoyed hunting the Reed Ranch in the Fire Falls, putting in a good days work, especially at the fair, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Herb is survived by his mother, Minnie McCumber of Gouverneur; two daughters, Carrie McCumber of Camillus, Melissa and James Phillips of Gouverneur; three grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie Tebo of Harrisville and Marie Denton of Gouverneur; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
He was predeceased by his son, Herbert C. McCumber; his father, Herbert W. McCumber; and a brother-in-law, Ellis "Junior" Denton.
Memorial donations may be made to the Jefferson County Red Cross or Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
