Mass of resurrection for Helen M. Rookey, 69, of Madrid will be held on Saturday July 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Madrid. Friends and family may be received on Friday July 9, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, 10 Church St. Madrid. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Madrid.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. Helen passed away on July 6, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, VT.
She is survived by her children, Pamela and husband David Weaver of Canton, Tina Burns of Madrid, Gary and wife Karen of Madrid, Steven and companion Lisa Arquitt of Madrid, and Brian of Massena; nine grandchildren, Jennifer and Jacob Stone, Kyle and Kolby Weaver, Christopher Rookey, Steven "Ben" and Bradley Rookey, Justin Burns, and Amber Hollinger; three great granddaughters, Mackenzie, Stephanie and Alexis; a sister, Beverly and husband Robert Mahlbier of Sonora, CA; brothers David Sharlow of Madrid, Paul, and Edwin Sharlow both of Waddington; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers Roy and Henry; and sisters Mildred Champion and Maude Freeman.
Born July 27, 1940 in Ogdensburg, she was the daughter of Henry and Florence (Jandrew) Sharlow. She married Gary J. Rookey on March 19, 1960 at St. Mary's Church in Waddington Rev. Msgr. Robert Arquette. Mr. Rookey predeceased her on August 6, 2009. She was self employed as a family care provider for 25 years. She enjoyed shopping, going to the casino and socializing with her friends.
