Mass of Christian Burial for (Helen) Lourene Stiteler Pierce, 92, of Canton, will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton with Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, celebrating. Calling hours will be on Monday, March 10, from 4 - 7 PM at the O’Leary Funeral Home; 5821 US Rt. 11, Canton. Mrs. Pierce passed away peacefully at United Helpers Maplewood in Canton on March 8, 2014.
She is survived by six sons, David of Massena, Steven and wife Cindy Pike Pierce of Adams Center, Peter and wife Susan Lee Pierce of Manchester, VT, Paul and wife Susan Baxter Pierce of Ogdensburg, Alan and wife Kathryn Kingston Pierce of Syracuse and Patrick and fiancée Cheryl Hoffis of Queensbury, NY and by daughter-in-law June Kelley Pierce of Poughkeepsie, NY. Also surviving is her sister, Claire and husband Bob Walker of Northvale, NJ; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and a brother-in-law, Richard Kuhn.
Her son William died on July 3, 1969 and her son Bernard died October 4, 2012. Her sister Betty Kuhn of Tappan, NY died May 2010.
Born October 16, 1921 in Blossburg, PA, the daughter of Homer and Althea Marshall Stiteler she graduated from Plattsburg State University in 1942. She married Merrill William Pierce on Feb. 6, 1943. Merrill Pierce died in 1978. The Pierce family maintained a family home in Madrid until 2001 when Mrs. Pierce moved to the Canton Housing Authority due to declining health. She was a homemaker and was employed by the Green Thumb Corp. from 1978 to 1993, rising to the position of Area Supervisor for St. Lawrence and several neighboring counties.
She especially enjoyed family gatherings which since 2009 were held at United Helpers in Canton. She also enjoyed spending time with many friends, reading and following the political process in the news.
The Pierce family is very grateful to United Helpers for their many kindnesses and for the care provided to Mrs. Pierce.
