Helen Eggleston, age 80, of Potsdam, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2011 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Her graveside service will be on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hermon Cemetery officiated by Rev. Lee Sweeney. There will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are handled by French Funeral Home, Edwards.
Helen was born on May 7, 1931 in Ogdensburg to the late Joseph and Olga (Paro) Chambers. She attended Knox Memorial High School and received her GED at the age of 48.
A marriage to Paul E. Perkins in 1949 ended in divorce in 1962. She married Leo W. Eggleston in 1966. Leo passed away in 1982. Helen has lived all of her life in northern New York. She worked as a waitress and cashier in several places. Helen also took care of cancer patients through Hospice until she retired. In her free time she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing bingo and especially fishing.
Her survivors include her longtime friend, Roger Gambill; a daughter, Donna Bell of Norwood NC; three sons, Edward Perkins of Potsdam, William Perkins of Pyrites, Rusty Perkins of Manchester and a step son, Leo Eggleston, Jr; five sisters, Etta Hance of Degrasse, Shirley Holmes, Lettie Holmes, Brenda Whitmarsh, all of Canton and Sandra Aldous of Beech Plains; fourteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by two sisters, Theresa Simmons and Martha “Molly” Hance; four brothers, Charles, Joseph, James “Zip”, and Philip Chambers; and a grandchild.
Donations in memory of Helen may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the Potsdam Rescue Squad.
