Harold J. LaValley, 80, of Winthrop Terrace passed away on January 9, at Quaboag on the Common.
Born November 22, 1930, in Massena, he was the son of the late Drexel and Elizabeth (Dabien) LaValley. In his youth, he was an altar boy at St. Joseph Church from 1937 to 1947 in Brasher Falls, and was a baseball pitcher. Harold served his country in the U.S. Army during Korea, where he received a Purple Heart and combat infantry badge.
From 1980 to 1994 when he retired, Harold worked as an assistant maintenance mechanic for the City of Canandaigua Waste Water Treatment Plant. Harold has lived in Warren since April of 2010, previously residing in Shortsville, from 1970. He was a member of the American Legion Post 34 in Shortsville, part of the Union Local 1170-Communication Workers of America Welder and took much enjoyment in hunting, boating and water skiing.
Harold will be greatly missed by his wife Mary Jane (Feulner) Rutland LaValley and her daughter Cynthia Darrah of Warren, MA. He also leaves his children, Stephanie Steinburg of FL, Joe LaValley of FL, Paulette Mitchell, Michelle Rice of TX, and Harold LaValley Jr. of TX. Siblings Charlotte French of Brasher Falls, Patricia Pennington of Newberry, SC, James LaValley of Massena, sister-in-law, Carol LaValley, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren also survive him. Besides his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his stepson, Roger Rutland, his sister, Mary Hughes, and his brother, Gordon LaValley.
A memorial service will be held at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Services will also follow in New York.
