Harold B. "Bernie" Carkner, 85, of County Route 31, Madrid, passed away on December 29, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and hospice. He was born on October 26, 1926, the son of Harold B. and Alta O'Shaughnessy Carkner. Harold went to Pine Grove Elementary School and attended Madrid School.
He proudly served in the Marine Corps, in WWII, stationed in Okinawa and served in the occupation of Japan. He married Barbara L. Bushaw on October 19, 1946 in St. John's Rectory. Harold worked at Alcoa for seven years and operated his farm for 29 years. He then went to work for Madrid-Waddington Central Schools as a bus driver and later custodian, in 1985 he retired as Supervisor of Building and Grounds. He was a member of Waddington Masonic Lodge #393, past Commander of Madrid American Legion Post #1513. He was inducted into the Madrid-Waddington Hall of Fame in June 2003.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; three sons, Timothy P. of Burke, John B. and wife Silindia of Walworth and Thomas E. and wife Michelle of Madrid; a daughter, Loretta L. Carkner of Norwood; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; a sister in-law, Erma Carkner of Madrid; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Henry; and a sister, Alta Rookey; a son, Kenneth in 1980; and a daughter, Gretchen L. Carkner in 2003.
Friends and family may call on Friday, December 30, 2011 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be on Saturday, at 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Memorial Home, in Madrid. Interment will be in Madrid Cemetery.
