MASSENA – Mr. Gilbert W. “Gib” Hollinger, 69, of 274 Andrews Street, peacefully passed away Monday afternoon, September 17, 2018 at his home.
Gib was born May 31, 1949 in Potsdam, the son of the late John F. and Hilda (Newton) Hollinger and was graduate of Potsdam High School. On June 7, 1967, he entered the US Marine Corps. He served in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded two Purple Heart Medals with One Star for his injuries he sustained, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was honorably discharged on July 27, 1970.
Gib worked for over 30 years for Speno Rail Service in East Syracuse. He was a member of the Massena VFW, Gerald R. Roy Amvets Post #4, American Legion, and the Marine Corps League, Massena Detachment. He enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, model trains, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Gib is survived by his children, Joshua (Chelsea) Hollinger of Massena; Lacey Hollinger (Shane) of Massena; his step-children, David Theobald of Massena and Les Theobald of Georgia; his beloved granddaughter, Valecka; his step-grandchildren, Brent Lenz, Kataya and Kylie Theobald; his sisters, Joanne Duvall of Massena and Cindy and Jim D’Melo of Tennessee; his brothers, Glenn and Brenda Hollinger of Potsdam; Randy Hollinger of Oswego; Mark Hollinger of Michigan; and Jerry and Sandra Hollinger of Potsdam; many nieces and nephews; and his caregiver, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hall.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Dawn Marie Hollinger in 1953.
