Genevieve R. Solon, 91, formerly of 40 Johnstown St., Gouverneur, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur. Genevieve had been a resident at Kinney Nursing Home since May of 2011.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Benham officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Genevieve was born on March 1, 1920 in Richville, to the late Orlen and Edna (Daniles) Rowe. She attended Gouverneur High School. A marriage to Harry J. Fuller and Lewis Solon ended in divorce.
She worked as a waitress in the Watertown area. She had previously worked at the paper mill and the Gouverneur Fruit Market. She also wallpapered and painted and worked as a waitress in South Carolina before working at the Crystal Palace. She lived in Watertown moving to Gouverneur in 1985. She was a member of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church and an active member of the Edwards, Dekalb, Russell, Antwerp and Gouverneur Senior Citizens. In 2002 she had received the St. Lawrence County Senior Citizen of the Year award. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and going to bingo.
Genevieve is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Denelda C. and Francis Briggs of Gouverneur; four grandchildren, Earl and Penny Briggs, Coleen Desormeaux and her companion, Joseph Lamb, Eric and Kathy Briggs and Scott Briggs; and seven great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a great granddaughter, Deseray E. Briggs, who passed away in 2002; and nine brothers and sisters.
