Funeral services for George V. Hess, age 81, of Plattsburgh, formerly of Ogdensburg, will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Joseph Morgan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Frary Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Hess passed away on July 19, 2011 at his daughter’s home.
Mr. Hess is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Melody Hess of Bristow, and Virginia and Andrew and Tricia Hess of Webster; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Susan and Mark Ashley of Bakersfield, California, Barbara and Edward Boyer of Plattsburgh, Ellen and Stephen Katomski of Bakersfield, California, Carol and Joel Wincowski of Granville and Joan Hess and companion Brian Potter of Hurley; and twenty grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Tracy, William Carl and Allen Charles.
Mr. Hess was born on November 29, 1929 in Ogdensburg, the son of the late William and Ida Verna (Wert) Hess. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy. He served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953. He married Mary Rita Burns on June 12, 1954 at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Francis White officiating. Mrs. Hess passed away on July 19, 2004. Mr. Hess worked as a production manager for Park Newspapers for 47 years.
Mr. Hess was a member of Barney Pond Hunting Club and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Hess was passionate about the Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved to play cards. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of the North Country or the Claxton Hepburn Foundation.
