Funeral services for 80 year old George J. Harris, of 23 Hepburn Street in Norfolk, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Church of The Visitation in Norfolk with Rev. Msgr. John R. Murphy , pastor, officiating, Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery in Norfolk. Friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk on Friday from 4-8 p.m. Mr. Harris died Tuesday at the St. Regis Nursing Home where he had been a resident since May 11, 2011.
Surviving are his wife, Arlene “Sissy” Harris of Norfolk; one daughter, Nancy ( Jeremiah) Hammill of Fort Jackson; two step-daughters, Stephanie ( Mickey) Fiacco and Natalie (Davey) Gravlin both of Norwood; four grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jedidiah, Matthew, and Reed; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, William (Denise) Harris of Florida.
He was pre-deceased by a son, John; a granddaughter, Meredeth Fiacco; and three sisters, Mary Frost,Eleanor DeLaire and Margaret McKenna.
He was born in Potsdam on February 28, 1931 , son of Eugene and Angie Charlebois Harris. He married Mary “Dolly” Darabon in 1955. She died July 10, 1992. He then married Arlene Haggett Francis on June 3, 1994. He was employed as a US Postal Service rural carrier in Norfolk for 32 years. He also was a bus driver at Norwood-Norfolk Central for 22 years. He was a graduate of Norwood High School.
He was a communicant of The Church Of The Visitation, a fire commissioner for over 30 years, and a active member of the Norfolk Fire Department for over 50 years. He enjoyed hockey at all levels and volunteered many hours at the Dominic Zappia arena in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norfolk Rescue Squad or the Norfolk Fire Department. He was a Korean War Army Veteran.
