George A. “Buster” Russell, 83, Norwood

Mr. George A. “Buster” Russell, 83, of 915 River Road, passed away on Sunday evening, August 15, 2010 at United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton, where he had been a resident since July 2009. He had been in failing health for the past few years.

George was born July 10, 1927 in Massena, the son of the late Willis G. and Ethel M. Dyer Russell. He attended schools in Massena. On February 20, 1956, he entered the US Army where he served until his honorable discharge on December 14, 1957. He married his beloved companion of many years, Joanne LaDue on September 7, 2007 at their home in Norwood.

Buster worked in the cable mill at Alcoa for many years until his retirement in 1988. He also did roofing work with Wally Narrow in Potsdam. He was a Disabled American Veteran and former member of the Elks Lodge #2074, Potsdam and Free and Accepted Masons Massena Lodge. George truly loved spending time on Norwood Lake, first having a camper there for many years, then building a home there. He enjoyed bowling having been the treasure of the Elks Bowling League for many years and bowled on various other leagues. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. For many years, he and Joanne spent 7 months a year in Florida, where George played bingo and shuffleboard with great enjoyment.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne; six children and their spouses, Randy Russell and his wife, Karin of Potsdam, Vickie Russell LaShomb and her husband, David of Potsdam, Robert Russell and his wife, Angela of Baldwinsville, Michael Ashley and his wife, Pam of Massena, Stephen Ashley and his wife, Jose of Seattle, WA, and Jenny Ashley of Ohio; eight grandchildren, including a very special, Alex Stone, who was very special to his grandpa; one great grandchild and a great great grandchild; four stepchildren, Brenda Greeley and her husband, Dale of Alaska, Timothy LaDue and his wife, Geanette of Florida, William LaDue and his wife, Mary of North Carolina, Clark LaDue and his wife, Amy of Oswego; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sisters, Shirley Pichette on December 14, 1977 and Gertrude Russell at the age of 7.

Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. Harry K. Snow, officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
