Geneva Harriet Rice, age 98, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur.

Geneva was born in Gouverneur on October 26, 1911, the daughter of Lawrence and LettieLewis Blair. She attended Gouverneur schools and was employed at the Crystal Palace Restaurant in Gouverneur as a waitress for twenty-one years. Geneva also was worked for Dr. Ernest Adler for sixteen years as a housekeeper. She lived on Johnstown Street for many years before moving to Knowlton’s Trailer Park in 1986 and more recently lived in Pine Grove Apartments. She lived all her life in the Hermon, Richville, and Gouverneur areas.

Geneva enjoyed being on the farm and helping with her husband’s horses, flowers, and just being around her friends and family. Known to some as “Smiley”, she thoroughly enjoyed her days spent visiting with guests.

Geneva married Maynard Jones on January 17, 1961 and Mr. Jones passed away April 16, 1978. She married Robert Rice on April 18, 1991 and Mr. Rice passed away May 17, 2001.

She is survived by two nephews, Roger N. Blair of South Edwards, and Bruce Smith of Syracuse; a niece, Marilyn J. Saur of Edwards; and many great nieces and nephews.

Geneva was predeceased by two brothers, Leroy E. Blair and Nelson L. Blair.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, June 12th from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur and burial will be private in Hermon Cemetery.
