Gary David Stacy, age 62, of Caroga Lake, New York, formerly of Gouverneur, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on January 26, 1951 in Watertown, a son of the late Grant Lewis Stacy and Gertrude Kenyon Stacy.
Gary received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at SUNY Potsdam in 1973. He was a History Teacher for the Gouverneur Central School District for many years until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Stacy
was also a Coach of varsity volleyball and soccer and a Driver's Education Instructor. His hobby was geology, studying and discovering rare rocks and minerals and was a member of the St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club since he was 11 years old. Gary was credited with the discovery of a new mineral and was given the honor of naming it cubic magnetite. He spoke in New Zealand as a guest speaker and expert in the area of lapidary. Gary was of the Methodist faith, a member of the Tice Methodist Church in Fort Myers, Florida where Gary and his wife Sherry have a winter home.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Whitmore Stacy, whom he married on August 21, 1971; two daughters, April Steenburgh and her husband Brett and Cindy Yetto and her husband Matthew, both of Niskayuna; one brother, Jerry Stacy and his wife Sue of Lisbon; two grandchildren, Chase Steenburgh and Bryan Yetto; and four nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, October 18 at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown, N.Y. followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams officiating.
Cremation was at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society.
