Freeman Lowell Ashworth, 80, of Klamath Falls, Ore., and a DePeyster native, died June 24, 2011, at home.
He was born in DePeyster June 28, 1930, the son of Frederick and Norma (Freeman) Ashworth.
He attended the one-room school in the district through the eighth grade. He graduated from Heuvelton High School and then went to Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute, where he graduated in 1950.
He then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving much of his tenure teaching electricity at Cheyenne, Wyo., until going to Thule, Greenland.
After leaving the service, he earned a bachelor's degree from Duke University and later received an MS in educational administration from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany.
On Jan. 17, 1959, he married Carol Rice at the DePeyster Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife; their three children, Eric, his wife Teal, and their children Kelsea, Jared, Keara of Carlisle, Penn., Coleen, her husband Steve Phillips, and their children Joel and Shana of Klamath Falls, and Scott, his wife Azucena, and their children Maria, Daniel and Taryn of Lynden, Wash.
During his life, Freeman was a high school teacher in South Colton and Gouverneur. He later worked for General Electric in Liverpool and served in the field service in Diyarbakir, Turkey, and Shima, Alaska. However, for the most of his life, Freeman lived in Sharon Springs, where he was a computer analyst at SUNY Cobleskill.
After retiring, he served as a local Methodist pastor in Stone Arabia, N.Y.
Wherever he lived, he was a member of the local Methodist church. During his free time, Freeman loved writing, music, and tinkering with cars. He was an author of several books and was a weekly contributor to the Times-Journal Newspaper in Cobleskill.
A celebration of life service was held Saturday, July 2, 2011, in First United Methodist Church, 230 N. 10th St, Klamath Falls.
