Frederic F. LaVack, age 82, of Gouverneur, passed away on January 13, 2011 at University Hospital in Syracuse.
Calling hours will be on Monday, January 17th from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Lay speaker Judy Sibley officiating. Burial will follow at East Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur.
Frederic was born on May 21, 1928 in Gouverneur, to Fred C. and Doris A. (Puffer) LaVack. He graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1944. Fred married June E. Washburn on August 19, 1948 at the Macomb Wesleyan Parsonage with Rev. Jesmer officiating. Frederic’s brother, Robert LaVack and June’s sister, Joanne Washburn stood up with them.
Frederic was a dairy farmer by trade, but his pride and joy was his draft horses. He and June bought their first farm in North Gouverneur then purchased and operated the current LaVack Family Farm in Spragueville in May of 1957. Frederic was an officer and member of the St. Lawrence Valley Draft Horse Association; a member of the St. Lawrence Valley Ayrshire Club; Director and President of the Gouverneur Co-op; a member of the Triple E Hunting Club; a member of the Gouverneur Agricultural Advisory board for over 45 years; a former member of the Gouverneur School Board; Board member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension; past president of the St. Lawrence Valley Bulk Milk Producers Co-op; and a member of the Town of Fowler Grievance Board.
Frederic is survived by his wife, June E. of Gouverneur; a son, David F. LaVack of Gouverneur; two daughters, Susan M. and Jeffrey Narog of Meriden, CT and Judith E. LaVack and her companion George Hayes of Chateaugay; a brother, Robert K. and Gloria LaVack of Gouverneur; six grandchildren, Krista Seliger, Karen Rizza, Jeanne LaVack, Jared LaVack, Jason Ritter and Kari Ritter; four great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by a son, Alton D. LaVack, who passed away in 2004 and a daughter, Mary K. Ritter, who passed away in 1997.
