Evelyn J. Alguire, 81, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur. A funeral service will be Saturday, May 21st at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Gregory Bailey, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Gouverneur officiating and burial in Fairview Cemetery, Edwards. Calling hours are today, Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Evelyn was born August 8, 1929 in Pitcairn, the daughter of Orley and Rosetta Riley Brasie. Evelyn graduated from Harrisville High School at the age of 16 as Valedictorian. Evelyn owned and operated Brasie Corners General Store for several years. She had also worked as a waitress, bartender, sales clerk, and town clerk. Evelyn enjoyed playing bingo, reading, bowling, painting, and flowers. She had been a member of the Antwerp American Legion Auxiliary and had served many years at the Gouverneur VFW.
Evelyn married Ellsworth Alguire on September 25, 1947 in Alburg, VT. Mr. Alguire passed away January 26, 1983.
She is survived by her two sons, Brian Alguire and his companion Susan Kroenung of Liverpool, and Brooke and Linda Alguire of Olympia, WA; two stepsons, Theodore and Timothy Alguire, both of Gouverneur; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; her companion Martin “Jim” Gleeson of Antwerp; and her sister, Marjorie Day of Sandy Creek.
She was predeceased by her husband; parents; a brother, Keith Brasie; and a grandson, Brian Francis Alguire.
