Mrs. Evelyn B. “Evey” White, 92, of 441 Leslie Road, passed away on Friday morning, January 13, at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she was admitted on Thursday from the St. Regis Nursing Home.
Evey was born January 2, 1920, in Massena the daughter of the late William and Sarah Carney Brainard. She graduated from Massena High School in 1938. On June 30, 1938, she married Francis P. White at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Timothy P. Holland, officiating. Francis predeceased her on April 21, 1987.
She and her late husband, Francis, owned and operated White’s Grocery and Gas on State Route 420 for many years before retiring. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the New York State Home Bureau, serving as the Treasurer at both the district and the county level. She was an avid bowler, where she served as the vice president and director with the Massena Women’s Bowling Association. She loved to crochet, having made many afghans for every family member and numerous friends. She also enjoyed doing cross stitching and crossword puzzles.
Evey is survived by her daughter, Carolyn “Cay” Jadwin of Massena; a son, Allan and Hazel White of The Villages, Florida; a daughter-in-law, Carol White of Massena; nine grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister, Elma LaForce of Massena, a brother, William “Buzz” and Darlene Brainard of Massena; and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was predeceased by her son, James F. White on December 24, 2010; her brother, John “Garth” Brainard; and her sister, Beulah Donnelly.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Monday 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Donald J. Manfred, celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
