Ernest D. Bruce, age 84, formerly of Moira, and currently residing in Mechanicville, MD passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Charlotte Hall Veteran Home in Charlotte Hall, MD where he had been a resident since August 2010.
He was born on October 12, 1926 in Casper, Wyoming to the late Ernest Emrick and Eula Dodge Bruce. Ernest graduated from Moira High School in 1944. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Ernest was united in marriage to Elaine Laraby on September 15, 1948 in Fort Covington, NY to Rev. Roberts Mallabar. He worked for Vermont Hardware, Dufort Brothers and Sears in Malone. Ernest retired from the U.S. Postal Service on October 31, 1986 with twenty six and a half years of service.
Mr. Bruce was a past member of the American Legion Post in St. Regis Falls, a past member and President of the Brushton-Moira Kiwanis Club, and a former member of the Men’s and mixed bowling leagues in Moira. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1947 in St. Regis Falls and the North Star Lodge in Brushton. Ernest was also a 32nd degree Mason in Syracuse.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Katherine Bruce of Mechanicsville, MD; grandchildren Jason and Samantha Bruce, Emrick and Lisa Bruce both of Frederick, MD, and Rhonda Bruce of Moira; and great-grandchildren Stephanie Perry of Moira, Kathlin Bruce, Riley and Ethan Bruce all of Frederick, MD.
Besides his parents, Ernest was predeceased by his son and his companion, David A. Bruce and Donna Rockhill.
It was Mr. Bruce’s request to have no calling hours. Graveside service in Sandhill Cemetery, Dickinson, will be announced in the spring. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Moira Fire & Rescue Squad in Ernest’s memory.
