Mass of Christian Burial for Ellen M. Russell, 84, of Potsdam will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Msgr. Robert Aucoin, celebrating. Burial will be in the West Stockholm Cemetery. Ellen died on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena.
Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 4 - 7 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to a charity of one’s choice.
Surviving Ellen are a son, Gary Russell of Potsdam; daughters, Donna Blanchard of Potsdam and Diane Ward of Brasher Falls; siblings, Bernice (Francis) Wolfe, Shirley (William) Irwin, Joan (Stanley) Jock, Jean (George) Thompson, George (Thelma) Burkum and Doris (Carl) Thompson. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Kermit Blanchard; six grandsons; Kevin (Jennifer) Blanchard, Kip (Sue) Blanchard, Kerry (Kelly) Blanchard, Sean (Crystal) Ward, Christopher (Sara) Ward and Patrick (Liz) Ward and by 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Ellen is predeceased by two sisters, Mae Reynolds and Rose Brown and by a brother Francis Burkum.
Ellen was born on April 30, 1927 in Potsdam, the daughter of the late Edward and Irene (Laiton) Burkum. She graduated from Potsdam High school in 1945. She worked several years for the board of elections in Buckton. On February 6, 1947 she married Donald Russell in Norfolk at the Methodist Church. Mr. Russell predeceased her on May 29, 1988. She helped run the family farm.
