Ellen L. Chambers, 79, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, March 25, 2011 at E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur.
Ellen was born in DeKalb on April 29, 1931, the daughter of Roland and Lula Taylor Weatherup. She attended school in Bigelow and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1950.
Mrs. Chambers had worked for the Burton Baker family, taking care of their six children including two sets of twins while her husband Philip served in the military in Germany. She also was a house cleaner for several Gouverneur families and had worked at J.J. Newberry's. Ellen was employed at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur for thirty-two years, retiring in 1998.
Ellen married Philip G. Chambers on January 14, 1953 in Gouverneur. Philip passed away December 24, 1997.
Ellen enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, especially Pedro, and being involved with civic functions, especially at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church, served in UMW Unit 2, and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the Seniors Club in Gouverneur and Hermon-DeKalb.
She is survived by her daughter Phyllis and Rodney Walker of Marion, her brother Dale and Bev Weatherup of Philadelphia, and her sister L. Elaine Lewis of Fowler. Ellen is also survived by her grandchildren Kimberly and Barry Geffers, Wendy Walker and her fiance Robert Fransman, Heather Walker, Cory Walker; her great-grandchildren Gage Geffers, Zowie Geffers, and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband; her parents; three brothers, Gordon, Lynn, and Elwin “Watson” Weatherup.
A graveside service will be held Monday, March 28th at 11:00 a.m. in Pleasant View Cemetery, Clare with a celebration of life to follow at the DeGrasse Fire Hall. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Memorial donations may be made to the Gouverneur Vol. Rescue Squad, Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, or Gouverneur United Methodist Church.
