Funeral service for Elinor N. McMechan, 91, a resident of the United Helpers Nursing Home and formerly of Main Street in Hammond will be held on Thursday (Sept. 23, 2010) at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Hammond with Pastor Cathy Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow the service at Fineview Cemetery in Hammond.
Arrangements are with the Fox & Murray Funeral Home.
Mrs. McMechan passed away on Monday (Sept. 20, 2010) at the Nursing Home with her family by her side.
Surviving is her daughter Trudy Woodward & her husband Allen of Waterloo, N.Y., their son Daniel Woodward of Westmont, N.J., and several nieces & nephews.
A sister Doris Sullivan and a brother Kenneth Turnbull predeceased her.
Elinor was born on Oct. 18, 1918 in Rossie, a daughter of the late John & Leila (Bacon) Turnbull. She graduated from Brier Hill High School in 1936 and The Newcomb Beauty Academy in Watertown in 1941.
She married Lee H. McMechan of Ellensburg, Wash. on May 8, 1947 at the Presbyterian Manse in Gouverneur, with Rev. Joseph A. Schofield officiating. Mr. McMechan predeceased her on July 15, 1987.
Elinor owned and operated “Elinor’s Beauty Shop” in Hammond for 40 years, and was a member and past Deacon of the Hammond Presbyterian Church, a member and officer of Valley of Thousand Isles Chapter OES # 382 in Morristown, past Matron of the Hammond Chapter OES # 285 and former member R.T. Elethorp Historical Association.
She enjoyed baking and her flower and vegetable gardens.
