After a long courageous battle with cancer, Mr. Edward W. Sherman, 83, of 2214 County Route 38, peacefully passed away Tuesday morning, April 29, 2014, at his home with his loving family by his side.

Edward was born November 24, 1930 in Potsdam, the son of the late George and Lillian Brown Sherman. He attended schools in Norwood. On November 29, 1948, he entered the US Army and honorable served his country until his honorable discharge on August 14, 1952. On October 13, 1949, he married Edith A. LaBaff at the First United Methodist Church in Massena. Together they were blessed with ten children.

Edward first worked at Alcoa before going to Reynolds Metals where he worked in the Cast House until his retirement in 1992. He was communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, fishing, hunting and gardening. Perhaps his greatest enjoyments were the precious times he shared with his wife and children.

Edward is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Edith; his eight children, Janet and Paul Giametta of Norfolk, Randy Sherman of Mechanic Falls, Maine, Orpha and Charles LaPrade of North Lawrence, Sammy Sherman and his companion, Lorraine Rochefort of Norfolk, Kerry Sherman of Winthrop, Maine, Edith and Lars Sandaker of Syndey, Montana, Christopher and Roberta Sherman of Norwood and Amy Hope and Brian Smith of Johnstowne, Pennsylvania; her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Sherman of Massena; 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Sherman of Star Lake; his brother, James and Bernie Sherman of Norwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sons, Craig John at birth and Danny J. Sherman on January 22, 1998; two brothers, William and Charles Sherman; and three sisters, Mildred Powell, Dorothy Lane and Eleanor Zabrisky.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena on Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Donald Manfred, celebrating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Parishville.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in Ed’s memory be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.
