A memorial service for Dr. G. Carl Alverson, 95, of Lisbon, and formerly of Heuvelton, will be held on Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 5 p.m. at Foxwood Memorial Park Chapel, Ogdensburg, with Rev. Walter Smith officiating.
Calling hours will also be held on Tuesday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at the mausoleum. Dr. Alverson quietly passed away Thursday evening, December 22, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.
Dr. Alverson was born June 28, 1916 in Rensselaer Falls, the son of Dr. G Carl Alverson Sr. and Irene Jenkins Alverson.
He attended public schools in Syracuse and graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1938 and Syracuse University College of Medicine in 1942. He did his internship at City Hospital in Binghamton from July 1942 to January 1944 when his was inducted into the U.S. Army. He spent two years in the European Theatre Operations (ETO) during World War II as a Captain in the Medical Corp.
He returned to Heuvelton where he opened his private practice in October of 1946. Besides his busy private practice, Dr. Alverson was the Heuvelton School Physician, Local Health Official and the Medical Advisor of the Health Committee of St. Lawrence County Board of Supervisors/Legislators for over 30 years. He was appointed President of the Hepburn Hospital Medical Staff and of the County Medical Society.
Dr. Alverson was noted by the American Medical Association for being the first Physician to do a newborn replacement transfusion for RH incompatability.
In 1981, after 35 years of private practice, Dr. Alverson semi-retired to work for New York State at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center where he was Chief of the Medical Surgical Service for 10 years. This was followed by a position as half-time physician for the St Lawrence Alcohol Treatment Center for five years. Dr. Alverson retired in 1997.
Surviving Dr. Alverson is his wife, Helen (Leonard) Alverson; two sons, William W. and John A. Alverson both of Elbridge; a brother Schuyler, and his wife Fern of Rensselaer Falls; four step-children, John B. Rumble Jr., of Ogdensburg, Evelynn (Rumble) and Wade Wood of Lisbon, Blaine And Elaina Rumble of Lisbon and Lenore Anne Rumble of De Kalb Junction. “Doc” had 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Dr. Alverson was predeceased by his daughter, Jean Alverson Kelly, in 1986 and a sister Eleanor Alverson Wait in 2000. A previous marriage to Ellen Meyer Alverson ended in divorce.
Doc was a kind and gentle man who truly was meant to be a doctor. He was a great fan of Syracuse University sports. He loved boating and spent every minute he could in his boats on the St. Lawrence River.
