Dorothy May Mackey passed on December 23, 2010, at the age of 90. Dorothy was born in March 24, 1920, in Middleville, daughter of Dorothy and Rensselaer Hill.
After being raised with her eight brothers and sisters in the family home in Newport, Dorothy attended ATI (now SUNY Canton) where she met and married Leo Mackey from Norwood. During their marriage, Leo’s employment took them to live in Massena, Schenectady, and finally to South Colton. Dorothy remained in South Colton after the marriage ended in 1958, and later moved to Colton. After her divorce, Dorothy worked at Clarkson College and then Saint Lawrence University and finally as a Senior Companion. Later she moved to Potsdam where she lived for over twenty years until her health began to fail. Dorothy spent her final months at Highland Nursing Home in Massena.
She is survived by her sons David and Duncan; daughter Kathleen; her sister. Joan Mackey; two brothers, John and Brian; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and her special friends, Kay and Pete Popiel.
She was predeceased by her son Tom; and a brother in law, Leonard.
A special thanks to the staff of the Highland Nursing Home for their care during Dorothy’s stay, and especially volunteer Laura.
By Dorothy’s wishes, her remains were immediately sent to Albany Medical College for medical research.
A private memorial will be held for family members at a future date. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to local cancer research and support organizations of your choosing.
