Charlie Junior Brown, age 85, passed away on October 8, 2011 at his home in Fullerville. Charlie was born on August 30, 1926 in Gouverneur to the late Charlie and Fannie (Stowell) Brown. He attended school in Oxbow and entered into the United States Army in during WWII in 1944 and served until his honorable discharge in 1946. In the Army, Charlie was a construction foreman in charge of 25 Koreans in construction of quinset huts and shelters for troops.
Mr. Brown married Erline Denton on July 10, 1976. The couple recently celebrated their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary. They have lived in Fullerville for 28 years, having lived on the Rock Island Road in Gouverneur before moving there. A previous marriage to Dorothy Turner ended in divorce.
Charlie retired in 1991 from the Groverton Paper Mill after 42 years of service. He previously worked on various farms, drove milk truck and was a body and fender man for Seaker and Graves Chevrolet. Charlie was a much sought after auto-body repair man. He did repairs and paint jobs at home in his spare time.
Charlie was a former member of the Gouverneur VFW and American Legion. He loved Country & Western music and dancing. Always keeping busy, he could be found puttering around the house. He liked to fish, go camping, and loved his animals. As a treat, he and his dog would often share an ice cream. Charlie had a sweet tooth and would always save room for at least two helpings of Erline’s desserts.
Above all, Charlie was a caring and compassionate man. He loved helping his neighbors and anyone in need, including plowing the snow from their driveways.
His survivors include his wife, Erline of Fullerville; a son, John Brown and his companion Connie Marasco of Gouverneur; a daughter, Sheila Bell of Fowler; stepchildren, Ellis LaPlante and his companion Charlotte Ody of Schenectady, Melody McCumber of Brownville, Tammy and Ray McIntosh of Chaumont, and David Cole and his companion Debbie Ashley of Gouverneur; and eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mr. Brown was predeceased by his brothers, Ray and Ralph Brown; a son-in-law, Herbert J. McCumber; and a grandson, Herbert C. McCumber.
Charlie’s graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fullerville Cemetery with Rev. Michael Bristol officiating. Funeral arrangements have been made through French Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in Charlie’s memory may be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley or to a charity of one’s choice.
