Charles J. Bush, 84, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at his home. A funeral service will be held Monday, December 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home in Hermon with Rev. William Hart, pastor of the DeKalb Junction Methodist Church officiating with burial in Hermon Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Charles was born in the town of Oswegatchie near Heuvelton on September 5, 1926, the son of Donald and Cecile Baker Bush. He married Portia Powell on May 2, 1946 at the DeKalb Junction Methodist Church. Charles graduated from DeKalb Junction High School in 1944 and worked on the family farm on the Old DeKalb-Canton Road. In 1957, Charles opened C.J. Bush Hardware Store in DeKalb Junction and eventually opened a hardware store in Gouverneur. The couple retired in 1989 and moved to Florida until returning to the Canton area a few years ago.
Charles was a member of the DeKalb Junction Methodist Church, a charter member of the Canton barbershop chorus, and a member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge. He was an avid bowler, bowling in many tournaments all over the United States.
He is survived by his wife Portia; a daughter, Phyllis and James Shaw of Heuvelton; and seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Charles was predeceased by his son, Charles J. Bush, Jr.
