Bryan F. Barney, 34, of Ft. Covington passed away Thursday, August 25, at his home.
Born May 25, 1977, in Massena, he was the son of Fay and Brenda Bennett Barney of Ft. Covington.
Bryan graduated from Salmon River Central School in 1995 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology Cum Laude from Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont, in 1999. He then earned a Masters degree in Education Cum Laude from St. Lawrence University, in 2002.
Mr. Barney first started teaching at Crown Point, teaching Secondary Science, he later taught Secondary Science in Turin.
An accomplished shooter and competitive athlete, Bryan won numerous awards at the scholastic, collegiate and Junior Olympics levels. He competed in the Empire State Games and also represented New York State at the National Junior Olympics, where he placed 29th in the nation for target rifle. While at Norwich University, Bryan was team captain and a NCAA Academic All-American in 1998 and 1999.
Mr. Barney was a member of the B.P.O.E. in Lowville, and an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, mountain biking, kayaking and coaching sports.
A devoted son and loving brother, Bryan is survived by his parents, Fay and Brenda Barney of Ft. Covington; one sister, Melissa and a brother-in-law, Eric Schaufler of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; one nephew, Jack Schaufler of Chapel Hill; and many aunts uncles and cousins, as well as three great aunts.
Bryan was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Friends may gather at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira on Wednesday, August 31, from Noon to 2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Don Alexander officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ft. Covington Fire and Rescue or to the Malone ASPCA.
