Bernard C. Tharrett, 79, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011 at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Bernard was born October 7, 1931 in Gouverneur, the son of Charles Owen and Hazel Elizabeth Grace Hartle Tharrett. He graduated from Gouverneur High School with the class of 1950 and served in the US Navy aboard the LST 912 from 1950 until 1954.
He married Patricia Elizabeth Gardner in 1953. Patricia passed away March 6, 1989. He married Wyona Jean Merritt in 1990, and Wyona passed away July 11, 2006.
Bernie was employed at CIVES Corporation for twenty-five years, retiring in 1989.
He is survived by two daughters, Chris Ann and Stephen Jacobs of Ashland, Ohio, Laura Jean and David Cunningham of Oxbow; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Karen Torrey of Moultonboro, NH, Virginia Burwell of Canton; a stepson, Mark Emrich of Macomb, and a special friend Lorraine Knight of Gouverneur. He is predeceased by his parents and an infant sister Irene Esther Tharrett.
Bernard was a member of the American Legion and life member of the VFW in Gouverneur, a twenty year member and past chief of three years for the Gouverneur Vol. Fire Department, and a member of the Gouverneur Exempt Firemen. He also served on the Gouverneur Village Zoning Board of Appeals, was a member of the NRA and Cranberry Lake Fish and Game Club, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
A funeral service will be held Monday, January 17th at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Gregory Bailey, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Gouverneur officiating and burial with military rites at Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Calling hours are Sunday, January 16 from 6 - 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Gouverneur Vol. Fire Department, Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, or Trinity Episcopal Church of Gouverneur.
