CANTON – There will be no funeral or calling hours for Anthony Joseph Crupi, 73, of Canton who passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Tony was born in Watertown, June 8, 1937, the son of the late Joseph and Vivian (Ellsworth) Crupi. “Knobby” was very active in sports through his school years, graduating from Watertown High School in 1956.
In June 1956 he entered the United States Marine Corps and was Honorably Discharged in 1959 with the rank of Sergeant. During his time in the Marines, he attained a certified scuba diver’s certificate and successfully completed the underwater demolition course in Key West, Fla.
On February 14, 1957 he married Rose Marie Medwick at Sacred Heart Church in Watertown.
He joined the P&C food Markets chain in 1959, eventually managing the Pulaski store. In 1967 he moved to Canton to open and manage the first P&C Store there, which he did into the 1970s.
In 1979 he went to work for the St. Lawrence County Highway Department, from which he retired in 2002.
In his retirement, he took up walking daily, devoted time to tending his garden and yard. He belonged to the former Canton Club, BPOE Elks Lodge #2074 in Potsdam and the Canton VFW Post 1231 and the Sons of Italy Foundation.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Anthony John Crupi and his wife Vivian, a grandson John Anthony Crupi and a step-granddaughter Nicole Bush, all of Black River, N.Y.
He was predeceased by a brother Joseph who died in 1997.
