Mr. Abraham “Anoniakaniate” Thompson, 69, 1573 Island Road, passed away Friday, September 9, 2011 at Cornwall Community Hospital where he had been a patient for eight days. He had been in failing health for the past few years.
Abraham was born April 29, 1942 at St. Regis Island, Quebec, the son of Joseph and Harriet Hopps Thompson. He attended Cornwall Island and Indian Day Schools. On April 24, 1965, he married Millie Herne at the Hogansburg Methodist Church with Rev. Leonard Owen officiating.
Abe worked at the Roundpoints Lacrosse Factory, Cornwall Island, carving sticks. He was a mason for many years at Charles T. Driscoll Masonry in Skaneateles Falls, NY. Abe belonged to the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. He enjoyed farming, making corn soup, fried bread and mowing his lawn. Abe also enjoyed his camp that he built for his family and enjoyed being with all his family members.
Abe is survived by his loving wife, Millie; two daughters, Tara and Randy Thompson, and Stacey Thompson , both of Cornwall Island; a son, A.J. Thompson and his companion Heather of Cornwall Island; eight grandchildren, Rammy and Amanda, Cheyenne and Garett, Cherohee, Lexus, Storm, Quest, Cody, Styler and Kain; four great-grandchildren, Camaro, Christie, Myles, and Draylon; four sisters, Cecelia and Thomas David, Marie Thompson and companion Bob, Alice Arwenize, all from Cornwall Island, and Glenda Terrance and her companion Ken of Waddington; four brothers, Henry and his companion Sarah, Ernie and his companion Beth, Harry and his companion Holly, and Howard, all of Cornwall Island; an aunt, Elizabeth Hopps of Cornwall island; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Joseph on July 1, 1961; his mother, Harriet Hopps on January 2, 1992; a sister, Sheila on December 29, 1961; and two brothers, Peter and Joseph in infancy.
Friends may call at his home beginning 12 noon on Monday until Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, Rooseveltown. Burial will follow at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse Cemetery, Cornwall Island.
