Debra Ann Williams, 68, Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Debra Ann Williams, 68, of Perrin Road, Potsdam died unexpectedly on Friday morning November 17, 2023, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 21 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton, NY.
Additional off-street parking is available behind "LUNA" at 18 Park Street.
Among her survivors are her husband of 49 years, Michael M. Williams, and four sons Paul, Ryan, Chad, and Cory.

Free college essay help offered to enhance college application

POTSDAM -- College essay help to enhance your college application is being offered in a free session at Potsdam Public Library Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 3:30 p.m.
The session, for high school seniors and transfer students, will provide individualized assistance in crafting a more professional college essay.
Mrs. Morrison, NYS certified English teacher, will provide guidance, tips, and feedback to help you create an essay that will be a combination of your writing and conversational presentation.

Long-time tradition Holiday of Lights set Nov. 24 in Canton Village Park

CANTON – For nearly the fourth decade of Canton's Holiday of Lights festival, Santa Claus will visit with many Canton area children and light up Christmas trees on the village green at 6 p.m. Friday night after Thanksgiving, on Nov. 24.
As the county's role model for twinkling little white lights on downtown Main Street trees and lighted red-bowed wreaths on each lamp post, the village becomes alive for the cold months ahead.

HARRISVILLE -- A Graveside Service for Clara J. (Cole) Atkinson, age 95, of Harrisville, NY, will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Harrisville Cemetery with Pastor Robert LaClair officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, November 20, 2023, at Frary Funeral Home, Harrisville.
Arrangements are under the care of the direction of the Frary Funeral Home.
Mrs. Atkinson passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

I’m not alone: I’m deeply offended by the recent use of the term “vermin” to characterize other Americans. I’m also deeply insulted by the continual use of terms such as “lunatics” and “deranged” to characterize other people’s apparent mental stability. These epithets strip people of their human dignity, especially families who live with legitimate mental illnesses.

For Halloween, I was a pilgrim. On October 31st, I began a five-day, 115-kilometer pilgrimage across Galicia, Spain, in the footsteps of those who’ve hiked to Santiago de Compostela since the 9th century AD, where the bones of St. James the Apostle lay.

James J. Besaw III, 45, Winthrop, was charged with Speed in Zone on Nov. 16 at 4:13 p.m. on Pierrepont Avenue
Besaw was issued a Uniform Traffic Ticket after patrol observed a vehicle traveling on Pierrepont Avenue at a higher rate of speed. RADAR confirmed the vehicle to be traveling at 45 mph in a posted 30 mph zone.
The ticket is returnable in Potsdam Town Court on Dec. 6.
