'Ladies, Lace and Lyrics' performance planned Sunday at Madrid Dam Music Series

MADRID — Madrid Dam Music Series will feature Nicole White as its first performance in its all female concert series “Ladies, Lace and Lyrics” on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 2-4 p.m. at the Madrid Community Park Building.
White is a 13-year-old singer, songwriter and musician who performs original music and cover songs. Family event with no smoking, alcohol or strobe lights.

The first bill passed by the new Republican-led House of Representatives was performance disguised as law making.
They voted to rescind funding for the IRS that would allow the agency to add staff and upgrade systems. This has been framed by Republican-leaning media as 87,000 agents coming to tax grandpa’s roadside vegetable stand. The Republican bill is performance because the Senate has no intention of rescinding this funding, and Biden would never sign such legislation.

Village of Canton names new street Thompson Court

CANTON – There’s a new street in the Village of Canton.
At Wednesday night’s monthly meeting of the village board, a recently-acquired street conveyed to the village by St. Lawrence University located between the SeaComm Federal Credit Union and Walgreens off East Main Street will be named Thompson Court, recognizing the Thompson farm that occupied that area years ago.

Clarkson University awarded grant to fund undergrad research experiences

POTSDAM – Clarkson University has recently been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to renew its highly successful Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) Site entitled “High Performance Computing with Engineering Applications” for another three years (2023-2026).
The grant will allow the REU site to continue to fund ten REU students per summer for ten weeks, in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

TAUNY hosting community dance Saturday in Canton

CANTON — A community dance will be held at The TAUNY Center, 53 Main St., on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m.
Traditional musician Dan Duggan will teach and call circle, square, reels (line) and contra dances.
Dan and the band High on the Hog will provide live old time string band music.
This will be a family-friendly community dance, and no prior dance experience is needed.
Tickets will be available at the door by donation.
This concert and dance series has been organized by Dan Duggan thanks to funding from Creatives Rebuild New York.

Canton board extends manure moratorium, $25 million project would take in manure from five farms

CANTON - Canton Deputy Town Supervisor James T. Smith told fellow board members that he got a first-hand look at an anaerobic digester and it’s quite an operation.
At the town board’s monthly board meeting on Jan. 11, elected officials opted to extend the town’s anaerobic digester moratorium law six months or until the end of June. A 6-month moratorium put in place in August was set to expire at the end of February.

10 nonprofit organizations in St. Lawrence County awarded $115,000

POTSDAM — The Rock Charitable Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded $115,000 to 10 nonprofit organizations in St. Lawrence County to preserve local history, maintain churches and cemeteries in the region, and support a local veteran’s organization.

Jan. 30 deadline for St. Lawrence County businesses, organizations to apply for ARPA funding

CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators recently allocated $2.9 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to be distributed through the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency to organizations and businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The deadline for businesses and organizations to apply under specific categories of funding is Jan. 30.
