St. Lawrence County students named Presidential Scholars at Clarkson

POTSDAM – The following St. Lawrence County students have been named Presidential Scholars for the Fall 2022 semester at Clarkson University.
Canton: Scott Ronald Ahlfeld a freshman majoring in aerospace engineering, and Abrinel Marie Seeger, a senior majoring in psychology.
Colton: Natalie Ann Warner, a sophomore majoring in environmental science and policy.

Potsdam town board approves thousands in funding to fire department, several organizations

POTSDAM — The town board has approved various funding amounts to local fire departments and several outside organizations and non-profits.
The board approved the funding amounts at its annual organizational meeting on Jan. 11.
Last year concerns over how organizational funding was handled led the board to restructure funding allotments and require regular requests from local groups, clubs and organizations.

Car catches fire at Blevins Motors in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- A vehicle caught fire Monday morning at Blevins Motors, 6691 State Highway 56, but firefighters were able to limit damage to the one vehicle.
Potsdam Fire and Rescue were dispatched shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, officials said.

Blood drive set for Friday at Gouverneur Community Center

GOUVERNEUR — January is National Blood Donor Month, and St. Lawrence Health and Gouverneur Hospital will sponsor a blood drive on Friday, Jan. 20, 2023 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m at the Gouverneur Community Center, 4673 State Route 58.
The blood donated throughout our communities assists in stocking the local hospitals’ blood banks first.
Canton-Potsdam Hospital Critical Care Unit Nursing Director Jennifer Moore, RN, CCRN, pointed out giving blood is an important and much-needed donation.

Atlas Clark Bleau, infant, Russell

RUSSELL -- Atlas Clark Bleau passed away January 13, 2023 while in the loving presence of his Mom and Dad.
Atlas was born earlier that day.
His family cherishes his memory as the brief gift it was.
Surviving are his parents Eric C. and Kirstie E. (Matthews) Bleau; sisters Haylee Bleau-Sibbitts and Aries Bleau; maternal grandparents Dan and Carri Matthews; paternal grandparents Chuck and Darlene Bleau; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Cabela’s Big Bass Tour coming to Massena July 28-30

MASSENA — The Cabela’s Big Bass Tour is officially coming to Massena, with a tournament scheduled to take place July 28-30.
The Massena Town Board recently signed off on the contract, which has a host fee of $35,000.
Though the deal is for one year only, the contract does include an option to annually renew the deal if both parties agree, officials say.

Valentine’s card drive for St. Lawrence County seniors underway

CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging and the Youth Bureau is organizing its third annual Valentine’s card drive this year for senior citizens.
Students of all ages are invited to make cards, notes, or drawings for SLC older adults.
Mail or deliver cards by Friday, Feb. 10 to SLC Youth Bureau, 80 State Highway 310, Suite 4, Canton.
